Online video use in Asia - new report shows overtaking Western markets'

Asia (excluding Japan) and BRIC nations (Brazil, Russia, India and China) have overtaken Europe and western markets on television viewing and video consumption via Internet or mobiles, according to a new report looking at online video use in Asia. The findings, from Nielsen's global media consumption index also shows that globally, 14% of advertising expenditure goes towards digital.

Mobile marketing trends - demand for location-based services rise

There is a growing demand for location-based mobile services worldwide, with the likes of check-ins and mobile maps being the most demanded features for technology on the move, according to new research. The 'Mobile Life' report from TNS, concludes that almost two-thirds of mobile users that don't have location-based features would like to start using the feature, showing that there is huge untapped potential these services.

Consumer trust in online, social and mobile advertising grows

Most consumers (92%) trust 'social recommendations' above all other forms of advertising, representing an 18% increase in 2007, according to new research. According to Nielsen's latest Global Trust in Advertising report, which surveyed more than 28,000 Internet respondents in 56 countries, 92 percent of consumers around the world say they trust earned media, such as recommendations from friends and family, above all other forms of advertising - an increase of 18 percent since 2007.

Top 5 internet firms 'only pay 0.8% tax in UK'

The top 5 Internet firms in the UK, Apple, Amazon, Google, eBay and Facebook, have been accused of avoiding some £650m in UK corporation tax during 2010, according to a news report. The Daily Mail reports that the big five internet firms paid 0.8% corporation tax on UK profits. However, the firms are using entirely legal means to do so, under EU law.

Top 10 TV advertisers in the US

TV adspend in the US rose by 2.4% last year, with Procter and Gamble, AT&T and General Motors the biggest spenders, according to research. The findings, from research from Kantar Media, indicate that the adspend on syndicated national segment is up 15.4%. Meanwhile, Spanish-language stations are enjoying an 8.3% surge and cable is seeing a 7.7% leap in adspend.

Are 'Empty Nesters' the forgotten consumer?

There are currently 3.7 million empty nesters in the UK with a total disposable income of £288 million, more than double that of those with children still living at home (£102 million), according to new research. The research, from Emptynesting.co.uk, a magazine and community website for mums whose children have left home, reveals that one million (28%) of empty nesters say their disposable income accounts for up to 10% of their total household income.

UK online adspend approaches £5bn: Video and social drive record growth

Online and mobile advertising leapt by 14.4% in 2011, to reach £4.8bn, marking a £687m rise on the previous year, according to the report from the Internet Advertising Bureau UK (IAB), conducted by PricewaterhouseCoopers. Despite the backdrop of a depressed UK economy, the increase represented the biggest boom in internet advertising in five years.

Are you being served - online? Most British firms 'fail the online customer service test'

It's official. Britain is worse than Lithuania when it comes to customer service, according to a survey of 2000 British firms and consumers. The survey, commissioned by live chat software provider Netop, found that today's customers want to connect fast, and engage live with a human customer service representative at their bank, building society, retailer, grocer or indeed any other provider they use.

Eight out of 10 PR professionals 'work with bloggers to gain coverage'

More than eight out of 10 (82%) PR professionals work with bloggers to provide coverage for clients, while 98% find bloggers useful or invaluable, according to new research. The study, from DWPub, polled 252 PR professionals in March 2012. The results formed part of a new whitepaper called 'The smart PR's guide to blogger outreach'. Facebook pays Microsoft $550m for AOL patents

Facebook has paid Microsoft $550m to buy about 70% of the patent portfolio the tech giant itself acquired from AOL for more than $1bn just a fortnight ago. The move forms the latest chapter in the battle for intellectual property in the digital sector, as the likes of Google, Facebook, Apple and Microsoft tussle with each other over the rights to provide their clients and customers with the best technology.

Topshop remains the top UK brand on both Facebook and Twitter, in terms of the number of followers, according to new research. The study measures how brands are using the top social networks and the subsequent effects on their follower base. Coca-Cola runs social media campaign on Spotify's Facebook pages

Coca-Cola has struck a promotional partnership with music streaming service Spotify, that will see the beverage giant run a social media campaign on its Facebook pages. Coke will integrate Spotify on its Facebook pages, which boast more than 40 million fans, and use the company's technology to power its Coca-Cola Music program. As part of the deal, Coke and Spotify will also launch a joint app in the coming months.

Tumblr to sell ads to brands for first time

Tumblr is to introduce paid advertisements on its service for the first time, as the popular social media site looks to capitalise on the 40 million blogs on its platform. The decision comes despite Tumblr's founder David Karp once saying that online ads "turn our stomachs". Under the new scheme, brands will be offered space within the site's "dashboard" from 2 May.

Twitter 'tried to buy Instagram before Facebook'

Twitter tried to purchase Instagram a few months ago, before Facebook shelled out a huge $1 billion for the photo sharing application, according to a news report. The report, from the New York Times, claims that Jack Dorsey, co-founder of Twitter, invested in Instagram back in February 2011 and was an avid user of the photo sharing service as well, until Facebook bought the company.

Google has claimed that 170 million people have registered to use Google+, as it unveiled a redesign that mimics the features of its larger rival. Internet telephony firm Skype has launched a controversial outdoor ad campaign suggesting some of the world's biggest social networks are 'degrading humanity'. The ads form part of a $12m marketing campaign encouraging users to switch from Facebook and Twitter to Skype as a more visceral communications medium. The ads ask: "Technology is changing the way people think and operate, but is it also degrading humanity?"

Just 10% of UK firms are measuring the return on investment from their social media campaigns, despite a 50% increase in time spent on the medium, according to a new study. The study, from digital marketing firm EPiServer, indicates there is continued growth of the uptake of social media by British brands, however the vast majority are still clearly struggling to measure its impact.

The co-founder of Russia's Yandex search engine has claimed Google is 'semi-open', criticising its Android smartphone platform and Chrome web browser. Mobile operator O2 has launched its much-anticipated digital wallet letting users send money using their mobile phone. The O2 Wallet is a free app to download on iPads and the majority of smartphones allowing consumers to transfer cash via their mobile, compare prices, track their spending and shop.

Tablets to become 'primary computing device by 2016'

iPads and other tablets will be most users' preferred device by 2016, with sales expected to reach 375 million, according to Forrester. Forrester analyst Frank Gillett made the claim in a blog post, adding that the company will be sharing the prediction in an upcoming report, "Tablets Will Rule the Future Personal Computing Landscape." The company attributed the growth to big screens, daylong battery life, always-on capabilities and superior mobility.

Sales from in-app ads in the US and Europe will surpass sales generated from mobile web display ads, with overall mobile ad spend set to rise 85.4%, according to a new report. Vodafone buys Cable & Wireless Worldwide for £1bn

Vodafone has bought communications giant Cable & Wireless Worldwide, in a deal that values the firm at a reported £1.04bn. CWW is separate from Cable & Wireless Communications, also a UK-based multinational telco, as the two demerged in 2010. The move is intended to strengthen Vodafone's enterprise and international services, and will let the mobile operator offload increasing mobile traffic onto the Cable & Wireless Worldwide (CWW) fibre network in the UK.

Ad management platform DG has launched a new tool that can trigger advertisements on second screen companion devices based on live TV content. Blackberry to focus on corporate customers after $125m loss

Research in Motion, the maker of Blackberry smartphones, has announced a new focus on business customers after it suffered a further $125m loss. The Canadian company made a net loss for the three months to 3 March of $125m (£78m), compared with a profit of $934m a year earlier. It has lost ground as its traditional business clients have switched staff to iPhones or Android smartphones.

Argos is to start selling ads on is online store, as well as via its iconic print catalogue and in-store, as the retailer looks to capitalise on its high UK consumer reach. Half online feedback 'comes from customers that buy instore'

Half (50%) of online customer feedback comes from those that bought products in-store, according to new research. The findings, from Bazaarvoice's Conversation Index, are based on more than 11 million pieces of user-generated content created over the past three to six months, also found that these shoppers prove to be less satisfied with the products they purchased than those who buy online.

Brits abandoned £1bn worth of online shopping baskets in 2011

Just under half of all UK online shoppers abandoned a shopping basket during 2011, representing £1.02bn in value, according to new research. The study, from Experian, indicates that one in five of these abandoned transactions were not taken elsewhere as individuals cancelled their shopping attempt altogether, resulting in £214m worth of net lost revenue for UK retailers.

An average of 70% of in-stream impressions play all the way through, with users being 200 times more likely to click on in-stream ads compared to standard banners, according to new research. The study, from ad technology provider MediaMind, highlights the power of in-stream video advertising. The research indicates that 75% of in-stream impressions play three quarters of the spot duration - providing advertisers with plenty of exposure time in front of consumers.

Fords runs reality TV series on Yahoo to promote Green Car

Ford is launching an online reality TV show in partnership with Yahoo in the US. The car maker will promote its Focus Electric model during an online reality program called "Plugged In." Government backs down over 'Big Brother' web surveillence plans

Plans to allow UK authorities to monitor the online activity of every person in Britain were pushed back this week after being condemned by MPs of all parties. Spotify takes on Pandora with online radio in US

Spotify is expanding its US services a year after the Swedish firm entered the market, developing an Internet radio service that would directly challenge Pandora Media. US-based genealogy site Ancestry.com has bought Archives.com, a family history website, for approximately $100m. The deal will see Ancestry.com bulk up its family history category for customers, while staffing up with an additional team of engineers, digital marketers, and family history experts. Google tackles fake reviews with spam detection tool

Google is tackling the growing problem of fake reviews, researching new spam detection software to prevent people 'gaming the system' with bogus ratings to drive traffic and sales online. A new Google-sponsored study, entitled 'Spotting Fake Reviewer Groups in Consumer Reviews', by University of Illinois researchers is being used to help to spot opinion spam using a new relation-based algorithm called GSRank (Group Spam Rank).

Sony Playmemories offers 5GB free cloud storage... but not for documents

Just one day after Google launched it's take on the cloud storage space, another key player has entered the arena. Sony's PlayMemories cloud storage service has launched in the UK, but unlike its rivals DropBox and Google Drive, the service only works for media files. The service is available online or via a downloadable mobile app for free on both the Android and iOS platforms.

Web design trends - Toyota revamps site navigation to boost car sales

Toyota Motor Europe has undergone a radical change to its consumer website, building a new navigation model based on eye-racking tests in a bid to boost engagement and conversions on its site. Google Drive goes live - Dropbox rival offers 5GB online storage for free

Google has launched its much-anticipated Google Drive, an online storage locker that lets users store as much as 5GB of photos, documents, music and videos for free. The cloud-based service is offering more space for a monthly fee, starting at 25 GB for $2.49 a month, 100 GB for $4.99 a month or 1 TB for $49.99 a month. Those who upgrade their accounts will also get upgraded to 25GB of storage in Gmail. The prices are a blow to Dropbox, which offers 2GB of storage free, and then gives users the option of paying $10 or $20 a month to upgrade to 50GB or 100 GB of storage.

Motorola wins Xbox patent case - Microsoft to pay $4bn-a-year fine?

Mobile maker Motorola has won a patent case against the Xbox console, in ruling that could cost Microsoft $4bn to meet the licensing demands. A judge at the US International Trade Commission ruled that the firm infringed four patents owned by Motorola Mobility. The claims relate to technologies involved in the H.264 video compression standard and wi-fi connectivity.

People will be able to pay for more storage, but prices are not yet known, Read Write Web reported. iPhones to drive Apple's value 'past $1 trillion by 2014'

Apple is set to become the world's first 41 trillion company by 2014, according to Piper Jaffray analyst Gene Munster, boosted by sales of iPhones, iPads and Mac computers.
